Thursday
R is getting frantic about the impending doomsday aka our official opening in China. With the days drawing close and almost nothing up, its no wonder he's freaking out. Thank god i m used to their style of working so i'm not as frustrated as some other workers. But this mad rush is really quite terrible. Our office here in china is starting to feel that panic. Take today for example, the fax machine in my room keeps ringing, either because R called,if not its fax from s'pore,if not its XJ. Other than having to answer all these calls, i have to narrate my thoughts to the admin lady Ji employed. Her name is Hao Yu Ying but i call her Hao Jie(HJ). She's replacing her younger sis who came two days ago. I dun think i spoke of her younger sis. Hmm....actually i was very nasty to that young girl. I told R that that girl cannot make it and R was already goin to fire her when this change took place. Well she being only 19 is like the typical ah lian in singapore. Only interested in play and keep acting cute. I cant stand pple deh-ing like a baby especially since she's working here. I
ended up having to entertain her in the day coz she complains of being bored, and at night i have to rock her to bed(well not literally but somewhere there). Instead of assisting me, i became her nanny.
I'm so so glad that they swopped her with HJ. HJ is a mom to a very sweet but crybaby 5 year old girl. It pains me to see that they have to be separated becasue her mom has to stay with me as part of the job scope. I told her its ok for her to bring her daughter here for work and that i wun tell boss about it. But she's very responsible and honest. SHe refused my offer and say the daughter has to learn to be independent and that if she does as i say, she's betraying the trust that the boss has in her. I swear i totally admired her. anyway, today is my first day working with her and i must say i'm super impressed by her work ethics. I had so much trouble translating my thot into chinese, she came right in and helped me. So for the whole day, we just sat at the table with me telling her my thoughts and ideas and she cracking her brain to form proper sentences. In the end, we managed to complete quite a lot of publicity materials today. Today is no doubt one of my most productive days!
I initially wanted XJ to help but she was having loads of trouble translating my thoughts so we had to request to R to get a professional translater do it. But now with HJ around, i'm very thankful that we dun need to spend additional money on translating. She really very jin4 xin1 jin4 li4. R asked me about her and i told him i have nothing but praises for her. Despite her absolute incompetency in english and computers, her dilligence and willingness to learn is enough to convince me that it is worth employing her. Since R has already someone in mind for adminstration, i told him she'll be a very good assistant in the office as long as language is not needed e.g. filing, printing faxing yudder yudder. But with her keeness, i think she'll pick up the language in no time too.
Another happy thing that happened is my increased communication with Mr Ji. I m so used to him ignoring me that when he called my name, i couldnt respond. Haha. bet he thot i was dao. heh heh. but it really din register that the name he was calling can be mine. haha. i am really a very blessed person. we talked about apparels, about name cards, about phones. about the pools and the marketing etc. alot alot. I'm so satisfied with the progress that i am making here. I really think things are looking up for me and that i can not only survive but survive very very well here.
The lady cleaner also likes me quite alot so much so she even invited me to her place and made dinner for me. Or rather, more accurately is she didn't want me for dinner thinking i will not like their cooking but at the insistence of her husband i got to stay for dinner. and because i do not have any high and mighty air, and that being their superior i still respected them and let them call me my name instead MS yang(beacuse i am so much younger than them), i've earned their respect and their liking. She even specially get her daughter to be acquainted with me so that i can teach her daughter things, especially english. Anyhow i like her daughter alot alot too. She's really a very sweet and thoughtful young lady. I can see that she loves her parents alot and is very mature and responsible. And like me, she likes to learn new things and is not afraid of challenges(haha, i know self praise is no praise ). On the whole, i think i only like to be with people who are enthusiastic in life.
ahh....what a wonderful week. I am beginning to enjoy my lifestyle here(despite my lack of sleep). I am now much more independent( I CAN HAND WASH MY OWN CLOTHES!! no washing machine here.and I CLEAN MY OWN ROOM, MOP my own room everyday coz this place is very dusty) and more mature and more wen3 zhong4. also, i'm mentally stronger and generally more calm when handling things. Other than Beijing, i am also beginning to like myself better. Amy, maybe u're right. I never knew the potential in me. Whatever the case, all that i can achieve here in china is definitely the fruit of all the culminated brillance of many many people in this place.
